The Nationality Law was postponed again in Parliament. This is the third postponement of the discussion, which will now be scheduled, sources in Parliament told DN, for Monday at 11:00 am. Just before the start of the assessment of the State Budget.
The date set for October 27th is due to the fact that it is on the eve of the State Budget and the Government considers it essential to close this folder as soon as possible, instead of waiting until the end of the vote on the document that regulates the accounts for 2026. Otherwise, it would only be at the end of November that progress could be made.
Parliament decided to cancel the plenary sessions scheduled for this Wednesday and Thursday, out of respect for the national mourning declared for the death of Francisco Pinto Balsemão. The request was presented by the PSD and approved by all parties with parliamentary seats.
Initially, the discussion of the new nationality law proposal in the Parliamentary Committee on Constitutional Affairs had been postponed by the PSD, due to the introduction of several changes in the last few hours. In one day, the project was in the freezer twice. The previous week, the PS had asked for an extension of the deadline, given the short time to analyze the PSD and CDS proposals.
PS, IL and Livre presented alternatives and Chega also delivered new documents to the parliamentary committee on Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees.
Remember that, while the Government parties propose an additional sanction of loss of nationality if the naturalized foreigner commits a serious crime within ten years of obtaining citizenship, Chega is now asking for this period to be increased to 20. The PS called for political consensus in the revision of the nationality law, proposing shorter deadlines than the Government in the naturalization regime and guarantees of specificity for citizens of the CPLP and the European Union, proposing that the term of legal residence for a naturalization candidate be at least five years in these cases.
