Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) is proud to be a sponsor of the Lupus Research Alliance New York City Walk with Us to Cure Lupus and I am honored to once again be a co-chair of the event.
The Lupus Research Alliance is an important partner and we have been working together for years toward the shared goal of developing better treatments for lupus and ultimately a cure. Lupus affects as many as 1.5 million people in the United States alone. It is a multi-symptom life-threatening autoimmune disease and can affect many parts of the body, including the joints, skin, kidneys, heart, lungs, blood vessels, and brain.
HSS is recognized for our expertise in lupus research and providing individualized, state-of-the-art care, support, and education to patients living with lupus through our Mary Kirkland Center for Lupus Research, Mary Kirkland Center for Lupus Care, Barbara Volcker Center for Women and Rheumatic Disease, and our Rheumatology Division’s Lupus and APS Center of Excellence. Additionally, with more lupus support and education programs than any other hospital in the country, HSS is also a leader in providing the highest quality of psychosocial support and education to patients and families impacted by lupus.
With the help of generous support from the Lupus Research Alliance, HSS scientists are leading the way to uncover the underlying causes of lupus, develop better targets for therapy, and ultimately a cure.
Last year we had over 520 participants representing HSS, and almost $50,000 in support for the Alliance for Lupus Research - an amazing show of strength for our second lupus walk. This year, we know we can have an even stronger showing of our HSS spirit. I invite all HSS staff, families and friends to walk with us on October 15.
I hope to see you there and look forward to walking together in support of Lupus Research Alliance.
