The general secretary of the PS, José Luís Carneiro, announced this Sunday, October 19, the party’s intention to support the candidacy of former socialist leader António José Seguro for the Presidency of the Republic. José Luís Carneiro, however, made it clear that “nothing can call into question the freedom of leaders, activists, supporters who have always had and will continue to have respect from those who lead the Socialist Party, due to their freedom of choice”.
“With respect for a freedom that is expressed, that is expressed, in the face of an election that has a very special, very unique nature, which is the presidential election”, José Luís Carneiro thanked “the respect” of all those who decided to “evaluate whether or not they met the conditions to move forward with a candidacy”.
The socialist leader stressed the respect due to these names, “because they did so in reserve for this dialogue, without public opinion being aware of its content”.
“And this shows enormous respect for those who speak on behalf of the Socialist Party as general secretary, but it also shows enormous respect for all the comrades who are in the democratically constituted bodies of the Socialist Party”, he concludes.
