Walk with Us to Cure Lupus News Update

Dear Friend,

We are less than 4 weeks away from the 3rd Annual Chattanooga Walk with Us to Cure Lupus!

Time is flying by!

But there is still plenty of fundraising time left!  Remember that people give to people that they know and there is still time to compose your email or letter to family, friends, and co-workers to ask them to support you in the 2006 Chattanooga Walk on September 30th at the Tennessee River Park.  Here are some helpful hints:

1.  Write a letter or email.  Tell your personal story and make it clear why the Chattanooga Walk is important to you.

2.  In your letter or email include a link to your personal Webpage or to the main Walk site in your letter http://www.lupusresearch.org/

3.  State your personal fundraising goal.

4.  Include that the Alliance for Lupus Research in the leading funder of lupus research in the world and that 100% of the proceeds from the Walk support promising medical research.

5.   Mention that all donations are tax deductable and checks should be made out to the Alliance for Lupus Research.

6.  Be sure to send thank you notes out after you receive a donation.

7.  Remember that the more people you ask the more money you will raise for the Alliance for Lupus Research funded lupus research projects.

Please welcome a new team captain to the Chattanooga Walk:  BeLinda Parrish.  Belinda has read Kay McDaniel's columns about lupus and the walk program and wrote Kay this summer about getting involved with the event.  Now Belinda is organizing her own team:  Bee's Team.  Thank you Belinda and thank you Kay for getting the word out about the Walk.

The Women of Warfare headed by team captain, Michelle Carlisle will be heading from Birmingham Alabama to walk with us again this year.  Looking forward to seeing this great team!

Keep up the great work Chattanooga!  All of your efforts add up to more funds to support the most promising lupus research in the country.  Thank you.

Your Fundraising $ at Work: Genetic predictors of thrombosis in systemic lupus erythematosus

Lindsey A. Criswell, MD, MPH - University of California- San Francisco, CA

Summary: People with lupus have an increased risk of developing life-threatening blood clots that can lead to strokes and heart attacks. Pregnant women with lupus are also at increased risk of complications due to blood clots. With her ALR grant, Dr. Criswell and her team plan to identify genetic markers that predispose people with lupus to developing these clots, also called thrombosis. The researchers will also examine the link between genetic markers and lifestyle factors such as smoking and the use of oral contraceptives, and between the genetic markers and the production of antiphospholipid antibodies, which are also known to increase the risk of thrombosis.

What this study means for people with lupus: Identifying genetic variants that predispose certain people with lupus to developing blood clots offers important information that will help in the prevention and management of this serious complication.

Arms Up!

Tomiko Wells's story began in 1988 in a DC emergency room.

Her doctor called her a "true save." "She was literally ravaged with aggressive lupus involving her brain and seizures, failing kidneys, life support and dialysis, and a lot of different medications, and over a period of about a week's time she went from a coma to waking up."
